History of the Department
Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital is one of the oldest government hospitals in Mumbai, established in 1874. Initially, the hospital was founded to provide free medical care to the native population of Mumbai and soon became an important center for public healthcare services.
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) developed as part of the extension of specialty services associated with the Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, focusing on the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the ear, nose, throat, and head and neck region.
A significant milestone was achieved in October 2024 with the establishment of a new medical college, transforming the institution into an independent medical college and hospital. Since then, the ENT Department has progressively expanded its scope and capabilities to manage a broader spectrum of clinical conditions and surgical procedures.
Over the years, the department has enhanced its services to include:
Ear surgeries such as Tympanoplasty and Mastoidectomy.
Nasal and Sinus Surgeries.
Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy.
Head and Neck Surgical Management.
Diagnostic Endoscopy and Laryngoscopy.
Management of Vertigo and Allergic Rhinitis.
In addition to providing comprehensive patient care, the department actively contributes to undergraduate medical education and academic development through lectures, seminars, case presentations, clinical demonstrations, and research activities.

Vision / Mission Statement
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) is committed to developing into a well-equipped tertiary care teaching and referral center providing advanced diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management in Otology, Neuro-otology, Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), Head and Neck Surgery, and Cochlear Implant services.
With the advent of endoscopic techniques, the department has successfully incorporated Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), and Microlaryngeal Surgeries into its routine clinical practice. The department also regularly performs Thyroid Surgeries and various Head and Neck Surgical procedures.
In addition to delivering high-quality patient care, the department is dedicated to strengthening undergraduate and postgraduate medical education through academic excellence, clinical training, and research activities.
With the establishment of the new medical college, the department is continuously upgrading its infrastructure, technology, and teaching facilities to provide better educational opportunities and enhanced patient care services. The long-term vision of the department is to evolve into a full-fledged super-specialty center capable of delivering comprehensive ENT care within the institution while minimizing the need for referrals to other centers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of surgeries performed by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) declined significantly due to restrictions and the prioritization of emergency healthcare services.
Over the past two years, however, the department has witnessed a steady increase in patient inflow and surgical activity. All routine and specialized ENT procedures have been successfully resumed, reflecting the department’s commitment to providing comprehensive patient care.
In the year 2025, the department performed a total of 342 surgical procedures, comprising 72 major surgeries and 270 minor surgeries. In addition, 113 nasal endoscopic procedures were carried out. The department also manages approximately 8–10 emergency surgical procedures per day, demonstrating its capacity to handle a substantial emergency workload.
The department routinely performs a wide spectrum of common as well as advanced ENT surgeries, ensuring comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients. Continuous efforts are being made to upgrade surgical infrastructure and equipment to provide state-of-the-art patient care and improve clinical outcomes.
Alongside patient care services, the department places significant emphasis on surgical training, academic excellence, skill development, and professional growth of medical students and healthcare personnel through various educational and training activities.

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) routinely presents and documents important, interesting, and rare clinical and surgical cases as part of its academic activities.
A case report on “Well-Cured Concrete as a Foreign Body in the External Auditory Canal” was presented at a Clinical Meet held at Government Medical College, Mumbai. The case report is currently under consideration for publication in the Indian Journal of Otolaryngology.
Faculty members of the department also participated in the Second Conference of the Women’s Association of Otolaryngologists of India, held on 22nd February 2026, contributing to academic discussions and professional development in the field of ENT.
Ongoing Research Projects
Research project on the outcomes of attic reconstruction on hearing in patients undergoing atticotomy for the removal of middle ear pathology is currently in progress within the department.
