The Department of Ophthalmology at Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital, Mumbai, has its origins within the historic academic framework of Grant Medical College and the Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious medical institutions. Functioning for decades under this umbrella, the department contributed to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, while providing high-volume, affordable ophthalmic care to the urban population. It developed alongside the rich legacy of ophthalmology in Mumbai, which dates back to dedicated eye institutions established in the 19th century. In 2024, a significant transition occurred with the establishment of Government Medical College (GMC) Mumbai as an independent institution based at GT Hospital, along with Cama Hospital, marking the department’s evolution from the JJ Group system to an independent academic entity while continuing its commitment to quality training and comprehensive eye care.
