Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital, established in 1875 through the philanthropy of businessman Gokuldas Tejpal, is one of Mumbai’s oldest medical institutions. The Occupational Therapy (OT) Department was established to support the hospital’s mission of providing comprehensive and accessible healthcare services to the public.
The department evolved alongside the development of Occupational Therapy in India, a profession that was pioneered in Mumbai at KEM Hospital in 1950. As part of the Grant Government Medical College healthcare system, the GT Hospital Occupational Therapy Department developed expertise in the rehabilitation of patients with physical disabilities, neurological disorders, and post-surgical conditions. Over the years, the department has played a significant role in restoring functional independence and improving the quality of life of patients through comprehensive rehabilitative care.
Today, the department continues to serve as an important center for restorative healthcare, focusing on patient independence, functional adaptation, and community reintegration.

Core clinical services
● Neurological rehabilitation: Specialized rehabilitation for patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
● Orthopaedic and hand therapy: Management of fractures, tendon injuries, and post-surgical rehabilitation of the upper limb, including splinting and fabrication of customized orthotic devices.
● Activities of daily living (ADL) training: Training patients in essential daily activities such as dressing, feeding, grooming, personal hygiene, and functional mobility using adaptive techniques and assistive devices.
