The Department of Community Medicine was established in the year 2024 as a part of Government Medical College, Mumbai. Since its establishment, the department has been actively involved in undergraduate medical education, preventive and promotive health services, community outreach activities, and public health programs. Regular teaching activities for First MBBS and Second MBBS students were initiated from the beginning, and the department is currently expanding its academic and field practice activities with the upcoming Third MBBS batch.
The department has successfully implemented the Family Adoption Program (FAP) for undergraduate students as per National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines. FAP activities for the 2024–25 batch were conducted in the GT & CAMA campus area, while FAP activities for the 2025–26 batch were conducted in the St. George campus area.
The department is also actively involved in the development of Rural and Urban field practice areas, including the proposed Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) at SDH Panvel and Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) at Colaba Dispensary. The department continues to contribute towards institutional development through academic coordination, internship orientation, HMIS review activities, DMER- college ranking assistance, immunization activities, awareness programs, and community-based healthcare services.
Recently, an NCD Corner has been initiated at GT Hospital under the guidance of the Dean and the Community Medicine Department to strengthen screening and awareness regarding non-communicable diseases. The department is also involved in bridge-course teaching activities (CCMP), public health outreach camps, Hajj vaccination activities, and interdisciplinary academic programs.
