Historical Foundation and Development

The Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital stands as a testament to philanthropic vision and government collaboration in healthcare delivery. The hospital's origins trace back to 1865, when Rustomjee Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy made a generous offer of £15,000 for the construction of a native hospital, contingent upon the government contributing £10,000. However, financial difficulties prevented Rustomjee from fulfilling this commitment, creating an impasse in the hospital's development.

The project found new life through the intervention of Arthur Crawford, who successfully secured the necessary £15,000 from Gokuldas Tejpal, a distinguished Hindu businessman and philanthropist of Mumbai, while ensuring government participation in the construction. The foundation stone was ceremonially laid on 10th May 1870, marking the beginning of an ambitious healthcare project designed to serve the native population of the region.

The hospital's construction, completed on 8th April 1874, represented architectural excellence of its era. Colonel Fuller designed the original building in the early English Gothic style, incorporating blue basalt facings complemented by elegant arches crafted from Kurla stone. The interior featured Minton's tiles for flooring and Taylor's patent tiles for roofing, while the structural columns, hewn from Kurla stone and crowned with caps of Porebunder stone, added both strength and aesthetic appeal to the edifice.

Formally established in 1875 through the beneficence of its namesake, Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital became a cornerstone of public healthcare in South Mumbai. Operating under the Government of Maharashtra as a free hospital, it has served generations of patients regardless of their economic circumstances.
