Historical Foundation and Development

The foundation stone of Grant Medical College was laid on 30th March 1843, and the institution was formally opened on 1st November 1845, admitting its first batch of eight students. This historic milestone marked the beginning of what would become one of India's most respected medical institutions. Recognizing that clinical medicine cannot be learned solely in classrooms but requires actual treatment of patients, Sir Jamshetjee Jejeebhoy came forward with a munificent donation of rupees one lakh for the establishment of a hospital to serve as a clinical training ground for medical students.

The Sir J. J. Hospital, an integral part of the medical college's infrastructure, had its foundation stone laid on 3rd January 1843, with the inauguration taking place on 15th May 1845. Over the years, numerous philanthropists contributed handsome donations to develop various departments, ultimately forming the Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals as it stands today. This group includes the Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, Mumbai, a government-run hospital established in 1874 with 521 bedded arrangements, which serves as one of the affiliated institutions providing clinical training and healthcare services.
